OUR PICK BOULDER AIRPORT’S WORLD WAR II BALL

A SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY

    There’s a sense of nostalgia

for the comfort of yesteryear, and the 1940s World War II Ball brings that time to life, complete with the “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B.” From the big band to the balloon drop and conga line, the “Greatest Generation” is celebrated on a grand scale.

The USO-style show was such a hit last year that it’s coming to the Boulder Airport again beginning at 7 p.m. June 19. Step into Hollywood’s TBM Avenger and enjoy a night of dancing with vintage planes, military vehicles, a World War II tank and the Hot Tomatoes, a nine-piece 1940s big band under the nose of a World War II bomber.

Re-enactors playing Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and Andrews Sisters Act Reveille 3 will be dropped off during the show by a World War II plane, and the red carpet will be rolled out under spotlights for their arrival.

Brandy Dew and the Frequent Flyers Aerial Dance Company will be performing 1940s swing-style aerialist acts from the hangar ceiling — one act actually on a plane propeller dance apparatus hung from the roof. Swing dancers will heat up the dance floor under a canopy of movie set lights, while cigarette girls hand out rations.

Have your photo taken with World War II planes, military vehicles and re-enactors, compliments of the Colorado Military Vehicle Collectors and Wings Over the Rockies Museum. Stop by the Tango Tango Club tent or the Cantina Tiki Tent, enter the 1940s costume contest and dance the night away in a conga line.

To top the night off in grand style, the “end of the war” will be announced with an authentic 1940s radio announcement, complete with a balloon drop and celebration.

Add low World War II plane flybys in the early evening, a skydive jump with a giant American flag, swing lessons, burlesque, 1940s film projections on the hangar wall, plane rides, hors d’oeuvres, wine and champagne, and you’ve got the makings for a memorable summer night at the Boulder Airport.
