MLB ROUNDUP

Orioles 4, Yankees 3

Baltimore: Cedric Mullins delivered a winning sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, Trey Mancini had his first three-hit game since returning from colon cancer surgery, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the New York Yankees Thursday for a four-game series split.

Mancini had an RBI single in the first and hit a tying solo homer in the sixth on a flat cutter from Jordan Montgomery, who shook off the initial sign from catcher Gary Sánchez. The 29-year-old Mancini had his first back-to-back multihit games since Sept. 23-24, 2019. Mancini missed the 2020 season while being treated for cancer.

Athletics 3, Rays 2

St. Petersburg: Matt Chapman homered and hit a go-ahead double with two outs in the ninth inning, leading the Oakland Athletics over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Shane Mcclanahan, a Tampa Bay left-hander starting on the day after his 24th birthday, made an unusual regular-season debut, becoming the fourth player to appear in the regular season after first playing in the postseason.

Throwing at up to 100.5 mph, he was given a 1-0 lead when Austin Meadows hit an RBI double in the first off Chris Bassitt.

Ramón Laureano’s run-scoring double tied the score in the third, and Chapman put Oakland ahead 2-1 in the fourth with his fourth homer this season.

Cardinals 4, Phillies 3

St. Louis: Tyler O’neill scored on David Hale’s game-ending wild pitch in the 10th inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies to split their four-game series.

O’neil, the automatic runner, started on second and advanced on Andrew Knizner’s groundout. Hale (0-1) bounced a curveball past catcher J.T. Realmuto, getting the loss in his first decision since the Phillies acquired him from the New York Yankees last August.

“It was a good, hard-fought series that we split,” Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said. “It showed a lot for our guys too, you know, to fight, scratch and claw to win the last game of the series.”

Mariners 1, Astros 0

Houston: Yusei Kikuchi took a nohit bid into the the seventh inning, Taylor Trammell homered and the Seattle Mariners beat the Houston Astros to avoid a four-game series sweep.

Kikuchi (1-1) did not allow a hit until Carlos Correa doubled to deep right-center field with one out in the seventh.

Correa was stranded when Yuli Gurriel grounded out to Kikuchi and Aledmys Diaz grounded out to shortstop.

That was the only hit allowed by Kikuchi, who pitched seven innings, struck out seven and walked two, throwing 61 of 95 pitches for strikes. Kikuchi walked Alex Bregman in the first and Myles Straw in the third inning, then retired 11 in a row.

White Sox 3, Tigers 1

Chicago: Carlos Rodón struck out a career-high 12 in six innings and Chicago beat Detroit in a doubleheader opener, the Tigers’ 11th loss in 13 games.

Rodón (4-0) made his first home start since pitching a no-hitter against Cleveland on April 14. He allowed two hits and walked one, and his ERA rose from 0.48 to 0.72.

Rodón gave up a run in the fourth, just his second earned run allowed this season, when Robbie Grossman singled leading off, stole second and came home on Jonathan Schoop’s two-out double.

Rodón struck out seven of his first nine batters, including five straight. He has 30 strikeouts in 25 innings this season.

Cubs 9, Braves 3

Atlanta: Jason Heyward drove in two runs with two hits and the Cubs emerged from their hitting slump to beat the Braves, ending their fivegame losing streak.

The Cubs had 16 hits, topping their combined total of 13 in the first three games of the series. Jake Marisnick hit a homer in the seventh and every Chicago starter had at least one hit.

Matt Duffy reached base four times on two hits and two walks. He scored two runs and drove in a run. Anthony Rizzo had three hits.

Brewers 2, Dodgers 1

Milwaukee: Travis Shaw hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning off Trevor Bauer, Eric Lauer won in his first start of the season and the Brewers beat the Dodgers.

It was the first meeting of the two teams since the first round of last year’s NL playoffs, a two-game sweep by the World Series champion Dodgers.

Bauer (3-1) allowed four hits, but the one that hurt was Shaw’s in the fourth. After Avisaíl García walked, Shaw drove a 2-2 curveball over the wall in right. Bauer went eight innings and struck out six.

Rangers 4, Red Sox 1

Arlington: Texas catcher Jose Trevino hit a tiebreaking two-run homer soon after his battery mate’s final pitch, helping push Kyle Gibson and the Rangers to a victory over the Boston Red Sox.

Trevino’s first homer of the season came on the second pitch thrown by reliever Hirokazu Sawamura with two outs in the sixth.

The Red Sox had only three hits, their fourth game in a row with five or less. The AL East leaders had won the previous three.

Boston had tied the game 1-1 against Gibson (3-0) in the top of the sixth when Rafael Devers had an RBI double on a full-count pitch.
