The Colorado Springs Gazette final

MLB ROUNDUP

Blue Jays 7, Orioles 4

Baltimore: Reese Mcguire had three doubles during a four-hit performance, leading Hyun Jin Ryu and the Toronto Blue Jays past the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.

Toronto, which snapped a fivegame skid by erasing a three-run deficit with two outs in the ninth inning Saturday on the way to a 10-7 victory, won in less stressful fashion in the series finale. The Blue Jays claimed their first set since sweeping two games from Miami on June 1-2 while also getting back to .500.

Yankees 2, Athletics 1

New York: Yankees manager Aaron Boone knew it off the bat.

“Usually, a triple play sneaks up on you,” he said. “Right away, I’m thinking, ‘That’s a triple play.’”

New York turned its record-tying third triple play of the season to strand the go-ahead run in the ninth inning, bailing out closer Aroldis Chapman from a shaky outing and closing down a win over the Oakland Athletics.

Indians 2, Pirates 1

Pittsburgh: Josh Naylor foiled Pittsburgh’s strategy with an RBI single in the seventh inning, helping the Cleveland Indians beat the Pirates.

Nationals 5, Mets 2

Washington: Kyle Schwarber homered three times and tied a major league record with five in a twogame span, leading the Washington Nationals over the New York Mets to take three of four in the series.

Royals 7, Red Sox 3

Kansas City, Mo.: Jarrod Dyson capped a 10-pitch at-bat with a tiebreaking, two-run double in a three-run third inning off Nathan Eovaldi, and the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat the Boston Red Sox for their first series win in nearly three weeks.

Astros 8, White Sox 2

Houston: Dallas Keuchel lost in his first appearance against Houston, and Abraham Toro had a career-high four hits to lead the Astros over the Chicago White Sox for their seventh straight win.

Keuchel, a two-time All-star for the Astros who helped the franchise win its first World Series title in 2017, won the 2015 AL Cy Young Award with Houston. He went 76-63 in seven seasons with the Astros and left after the 2018 season for Atlanta before signing a $55.5 million, threeyear contract with Chicago after the 2019 season.

Cardinals 9, Braves 1 Braves 1, Cardinals 0

Atlanta: Drew Smyly didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning, Ronald Acuña Jr. hit his 100th career homer and the Atlanta Braves earned a split of a day-night doubleheader with a victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Smyly signed an $11 million, one-year deal as a free agent in November and has largely been a disappointment for the Braves.

He held the Cardinals hitless until Paul Goldschmidt reached on an infield single with two outs in the sixth.

Second baseman Ozzie Albies fielded the ball in shallow right field and made a wide throw to first. Cubs 2, Marlins 0

Chicago: Alec Mills watched as the Chicago Cubs got battered in backto-back games by the Miami Marlins. Things sure were different this time.

Mills and three relievers combined on a shutout and Chicago bounced back from two lopsided losses to beat Miami and avoid a sweep. Twins 4, Rangers 2

Arlington, Texas: Byron Buxton launched an early two-run homer into the second deck, Kenta Maeda earned his first win since May 3 and the Minnesota Twins beat the reeling Texas Rangers for their fourth straight win.

Giants 11, Phillies 2

San Francisco: Wilmer Flores had four hits, including two of San Francisco’s four home runs, and the Giants routed the Philadelphia Phillies.

Brandon Crawford hit his 16th homer and Mike Yastrzemski combined with Flores for consecutive homers in the first off Zach Eflin (2-6). San Francisco has 107 home runs, tied with Toronto for the major league lead.

“Today I think I got a little help from the wind,” Flores said. “Honestly, our team is not looking to hit homers all the time, but that comes with good swings and good pitches that we’re swinging at.”

Tigers 5, Angels 3 (10)

San Francisco: Wilmer Flores had four hits, including two of San Francisco’s four home runs, and the Giants routed the Philadelphia Phillies.

Mariners 6, Rays 2 (10)

Seattle: Shed Long Jr. hit a grand slam with two outs in the 10th inning, lifting the Seattle Mariners over the Tampa Bay Rays for a fourgame sweep.

Padres 3, Reds 2

San Diego: Playing in front of mostly full stands at Petco Park has helped restore the San Diego Padres’ badly bruised swagger.

The fans are thrilled to be back in full force. The Padres, who won a wild card playoff series in their empty ballpark against St. Louis in October, are happy they’re returned.

Wil Myers hit a two-run triple and scored on Joey Votto’s errant throw in the third inning as the San Diego Padres beat Cincinnati for their first four-game sweep ever against the Reds and their first four-game sweep overall since Aug. 18-21, 2011, against the Marlins.

Rays set to promote SS Wander Franco, MLB’S No. 1 prospect

St. Petersburg, Fla.: Tampa Bay Rays infielder Wander Franco, considered the best prospect in the minors, is set to make his major league debut.

The Rays say they plan to promote the 20-year-old Franco from Triple-a Durham on Tuesday. Tampa Bay is off Monday and hosts the Red Sox on Tuesday night.

Franco is a .332 hitter with 145 RBIS in three minor league seasons.
