Lawmakers strike deal for Capitol security, refugees

Senate lawmakers reached a bipartisan agreement to spend nearly a billion dollars to improve Capitol security in the wake of the Jan. 6 riots that overwhelmed the police, leaving the House and Senate vulnerable to hundreds of protesters who stormed into the building while both chambers were in session certifying the results of the 2020 election. The same measure would also spend $1.13 billion to assist Afghan refugees, who are likely to flee the country now that most U.S. troops are leaving, and another $42 million in COVID mitigation funding for the Capitol complex. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he’s seeking a time agreement with the GOP to bring up and pass the bill this week. It would also have to clear the House. House lawmakers narrowly passed a $1.9 billion spending bill in May with very little GOP support.
