NHL: Avalanche to honor former GM Lacroix with banner

Former Colorado Avalanche general manager and executive Pierre Lacroix will be honored with a banner-raising ceremony before the team’s Oct. 16 game vs. the St. Louis Blues. Lacroix died Dec. 13, 2020, at age 72. A release said the banner, which will be near six retired jerseys, would highlight Lacroix’s achievements. He steered the Avalanche toward two Stanley Cup championships and six Western Conference Final appearances. KATE SHEFTE, THE GAZETTE

• PHILADELPHIA Flyers center Kevin Hayes will miss four to six weeks after abdominal surgery. Flyers coach Alain Vigneault said Hayes was skating with his teammates Monday when he “felt something in his groin.” Hayes had surgery and could miss roughly the first 10 games of the season. Hayes scored 12 goals and had 31 points in 55 games last season. The 29-year-old Hayes has 127 goals and 174 assists for 301 points in 505 games with three teams in seven seasons.

• KIRILL KAPRIZOV and the Wild agreed on a contract that will enable the NHL’S Calder Trophy winner to join the team for training camp. The deal is for five years and $45M through the 2025-26 season.

• COLUMBUS Blue Jackets signed goaltender Elvis Merzlikins to a five-year, $27 million contract extension. The longterm deal throws into question the future of Joonas Korpisalo, who has shared time in the net with Merzlikins the last two seasons.
