MLB ROUNDUP

Giants 9, Mets 3

San Francisco: Evan Longoria homered twice and Joc Pederson hit his fourth in two games as the San Francisco Giants went deep four times in the first two innings off rookie Thomas Szapucki.

Mike Yastrzemski also homered off Szapucki, a 25-year-old left-hander making his first major league start and second appearance after the Mets summoned him from the minors due to a string of injuries.

New York lost two of three to the Giants, the Mets’ second series loss in their first 14 series this season.

Nationals 1, Dodgers 0

Washington: Erick Fedde and three relievers combined on a six-hitter, César Hernández had an RBI single and Washington beat Los Angeles to avoid a series sweep.

Washington snapped a nine-game skid against Los Angeles. The Nationals had not defeated the Dodgers since Game 5 of the NL Division Series in 2019.

Tanner Rainey stranded two in the ninth for his fourth save in six tries.

Brewers 2, Padres 1

San Diego: Rowdy Tellez doubled off Yu Darvish to bring in the tying run in the seventh inning and Tyrone Taylor followed with a sacrifice fly for the Milwaukee Brewers, who beat San Diego to take two of three.

Darvish was brilliant in holding Milwaukee to one hit through six innings, but the Brewers finally broke through in the seventh with two hits, a walk and the sacrifice fly.

Athletics 4, Mariners 2

Seattle: Seth Brown and Elvis Andrus both homered off reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray, and Oakland beat Seattle, dropping the Mariners into last place in the AL West.

Oakland took two of three in the series and leapfrogged the Mariners in the division standings. While it’s still only 45 games into the season, Seattle (18-27) has lost eight of 10 and is quickly trending toward irrelevance in a season that started with expectations of ending the longest playoff drought in the major leagues.

Tigers 4, Twins 2

Minneapolis: The basics of hitting and scoring have been a persistent difficulty for Detroit this season.

With a few big swings, one of the least productive lineups in baseball helped the Tigers avoid another sweep in Minnesota.

Jeimer Candelario hit the tiebreaking two-run homer in the 10th inning after Harold Castro went deep twice earlier, and the Tigers came back to beat the Twins.

Reds 4, Cubs 3

Cincinnati: Joey Votto homered and tripled, then shouted at Cubs reliever Rowan Wick during a tense ending to the Cincinnati Reds’ win over Chicago.

Votto had a solo homer in the

second inning off Kyle Hendricks and a two-run triple in the third as Cincinnati ended a two-game skid.

Wick brushed back the 16-year veteran in the eighth, then walked him. Votto barked at Wick, and the dugout as he made his way to first.

Yankees 2, Orioles 0

New York: JP Sears pitched five poised innings to win his first career start and the no-name relievers left in New York’s banged-up bullpen finished a five-hitter as the Yankees beat Baltimore.

Aaron Judge doubled and scored on a single by Miguel Andújar — his first RBI in the big leagues this season. New York added a second run in the fourth on a throwing error by prized rookie catcher Adley Rutschman.

Rays 5, Marlins 4

St. Petersburg, Fla.: Harold Ramírez homered in a five-run first inning, Colin Poche struck out Jesús Aguilar to strand the bases loaded in the ninth and Tampa Bay held on for a victory over Miami.

Drew Rasmussen won his fifth straight decision over six starts, giving up three runs and six hits in five innings with seven strikeouts. It was the first time in six starts he gave up more than one run.

Miami has lost five of its last six and is 6-16 following a 12-8 start.

Braves 8, Phillies 4

Atlanta: Dansby Swanson scored the tiebreaking run in the fifth inning on an excruciating defensive sequence by the Phillies, and Atlanta beat Philadelphia.

Swanson singled and came around to score for a 5-4 lead on a play that started with a wild pitch by reliever José Alvarado and a high throw from catcher J.T. Realmuto in an attempt to keep Swanson from reaching second.

Astros 2, Guardians 1

Houston: Yuli Gurriel and José Siri had two hits each, Cristian Javier tied a career high with nine strikeouts and Houston upended Cleveland to win their series.

It was a much-needed performance from Gurriel, who hit .319 last season to win the AL batting title but has struggled this year. He entered in an 0-for-9 slide and is hitting .224 this year.

White Sox 3, Red Sox 1

Chicago: Jake Burger hit a threerun homer in the fifth inning and pitcher Lucas Giolito allowed just one run on five hits with seven strikouts in sixing innings of work as Chicago beat Boston.

Jose Abreu doubled to right to open the bottom of the fifth for Chicago. Then AJ Pollock took first on a throwing error by Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers. That’s when Burger stepped to the plate and hit a 444-foot home run to clear the bases.

Boston’s only run came in the first on an RBI single from Alex Verdugo.
