Falcons snap ‘L’ streak to Aztecs

SAN DIEGO • Air Force answered its two questions in vastly different ways on Saturday night.

The two items in question — could Brad Roberts break the single-season rushing record and could the team snap a nine-game losing streak to San Diego State?

The Roberts was answered on the first drive of the game. The next was answered by the Falcons’ defense throughout the second half of a 13-3 suffocation of the Aztecs in their new stadium.

Roberts entered the game needing 69 yards to tie Beau Morgan’s record set in 1996. He ran for six yards on the first play and 63 on the second. He then finished off a 75yard scoring drive with what turned out to be the only touchdown of the game.

Roberts set a career-high with 187 yards. He is now the program’s single-season leader in yards with 1,612, 308 carries and 10 100-yard games.

San Diego State’s nine-game streak began in 2010.

The Falcons (9-3, 5-3 Mountain West) held San Diego State (7-5, 5-3) to 187 yards of total offense, including minus-1 rushing yard. The Air Force defense didn’t allow San Diego State to hit 100 yards of total offense until the

fourth quarter with 8:58 remaining.

There were also three turnovers, with Payton Zdroik recovering a fumble and Trey Taylor and Jayden Goodwin intercepting passes in the end zone late in the fourth quarter.

At one point in the game Roberts had 30 carries for 177 yards and San Diego State had run 30 plays for 96 yards of total offense.
