The Colorado Springs Gazette final

TOP 25 ROUNDUP

Georgia 37, Georgia Tech 14

Athens, Ga.: Stetson Bennett threw two touchdown passes and No. 1 Georgia completed back-to-back undefeated regular seasons for the first time in school history by overcoming a slow start to beat Georgia Tech 37-14.

Georgia was down 7-0 early but scored 37 unanswered points for its fifth consecutive win in the state rivalry. The Bulldogs led Georgia Tech only 10-7 at halftime before overpowering the Yellow Jackets with their running game. Kenny Mcintosh and Kendall Milton ran for touchdowns. Georgia outrushed Georgia Tech 264-40. Georgia advances to next week’s Southeastern Conference championship game against No. 6 LSU.

TCU 62, Iowa St. 14

Fort Worth, Texas: Kendre Miller ran for two touchdowns as fourthranked TCU completed the first undefeated regular season by a Big 12 team since 2009 with a 62-14 victory over Iowa State.

The win got the 12-0 Horned Frogs closer to making the four-team College Football Playoff. Max Duggan threw TDS to three receivers for the Frogs, who still have the Big 12 championship game to play next Saturday in coach Sonny Dykes’ first season. But they will go into that as one of only three undefeated teams remaining.

Iowa State finished 4-8 after its most lopsided loss since the 2014 finale at TCU.

USC 38, Notre Dame 27

Los Angeles: No. 5 Southern California capped its outstanding regular season under new coach Lincoln Riley by staying firmly in the College Football Playoff race with a victory over No. 13 Notre Dame.

Caleb Willams polished his Heisman Trophy credentials with 232 yards passing and four total touchdowns while the Trojans completed their first 11-win regular season since 2008 by ending their fourgame losing streak to their rival. Notre Dame’s Drew Pyne passed for 318 yards and completed his first 15 throws into the fourth quarter.

Texas A&M 38, LSU 23

College Station, Texas: Devon Achane had a career-best 215 yards rushing with two touchdowns, and Texas A&M stunned No. 6 LSU, all but certainly knocking the Tigers out of contention for the College Football Playoff.

Conner Weigman threw two TD passes for the Aggies and Demani Richardson returned a fumble for a score. The game was tied at 17-all in the third quarter before A&M scored 21 straight points. LSU had already secured a spot in next week’s SEC title game against unbeaten No. 1 Georgia, and a win there could have put the Tigers in the playoff. But now they have three losses and even beating Georgia likely won’t be enough.

South Carolina 31, Clemson 30

Clemson, S.C.: Spencer Rattler threw for 360 yards and two touchdowns and South Carolina beat a top-10 opponent for the second straight week with a victory over No. 7 Clemson.

The Gamecocks rallied from 14-0 down in the first quarter to end a seven-game series losing streak. They also ended the Tigers’ 40-game home winning streak that stretched to 2016. Antwane Wells Jr. had nine catches for 131 yards including both of Rattler’s TD throws. A week ago, South Carolina stunned then-fifth-ranked Tennessee 63-38.

Alabama 49, Auburn 27

Tuscaloosa, Ala.: Bryce Young passed for 343 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score in perhaps his final home game for No. 8 Alabama, leading the Crimson Tide past Auburn in the Iron Bowl.

Alabama reached double digits in wins for a 15th consecutive season despite being unable to fulfill those ever-present national title aspirations. The Tigers were trying to ensure bowl eligibility and salvage a disappointing campaign that included the firing of coach Bryan Harsin. Young, a junior, is projected as a high NFL draft pick if he leaves Alabama, as is Tide linebacker Will Anderson Jr.

Tennessee 56, Vanderbilt 0

Nashville, Tenn.: Jaylen Wright ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns on five carries, with Jabari Small running for two more scores as ninth-ranked Tennessee never trailed in routing in-state rival Vanderbilt.

The Volunteers rebounded from losing two of their last three games to clinch their first 10-win regular season since 2003, and first overall since 2007. The losses had dropped the Vols from first in the inaugural College Football Playoff ranking to 10th.

Oregon State 38, Oregon 34

Corvallis, Ore.: Isaiah Newell ran for the go-ahead touchdown with 8:11 remaining, and No. 22 Oregon State took advantage of critical mistakes in the fourth quarter by No. 10 Oregon to rally for a victory.

The Beavers trailed 31-10 late in the third quarter and 34-17 early in the fourth, but the Ducks gave their rivals a short field on three consecutive possessions, leading to touchdowns. Oregon can still make the Pac-12 title game but needs Washington State to beat rival Washington. Oregon State ran for 268 yards and five touchdowns, overcoming its lack of a passing game.

Penn State 35, Michigan St. 16

State College, Pa.: Sean Clifford threw four touchdown passes and No. 11 Penn State’s defense tightened up late to beat Michigan State in the regular-season finale.

Tight end Theo Johnson caught two touchdown passes, Tyler Warren and running back Nick Singleton each caught one, and Keandre Lambert-smith threw a touchdown pass and caught another for the 10-2 Nittany Lions. The 5-7 Spartans were down a handful of players due to injuries and suspensions. Penn State held Michigan State to just eight rushing yards and were up 14-3 at halftime. But the Spartans cut Penn State’s lead to 21-16 with 10:52 to play after quarterback Payton Thorne led back-to-back touchdown drives.

Utah, 63, Colorado 21

Boulder: Cameron Rising threw three touchdown passes before taking a seat for the second half, Ja’quinden Jackson ran for three scores and No. 14 Utah routed Colorado 63-21 to remain in the chase for the last spot into the Pac-12 title game.

The Utes entered the weekend with an outside shot at defending their league title, but things are starting to fall into place. UCLA did its part by knocking off Cal on Friday. Then, the big assist came when No. 22 Oregon State surprised 10th-ranked Oregon. All that remains is No. 12 Washington beating Washington State late Saturday, and the Utes will earn a spot based on a tiebreaker. USC already has a spot for next Friday’s game in Las Vegas.

Kansas St. 47, Kansas 27

Manhattan, Kan.: Will Howard threw for 213 yards and two touchdowns, Deuce Vaughn ran for 147 yards and a score, and No. 15 Kansas State routed Kansas to earn a shot at payback against TCU in the Big 12 championship game.

The Wildcats blew a 28-10 lead in a 38-28 loss to the Horned Frogs during the regular season. The rematch will be played Dec. 3 in Arlington, Texas.

James Madison 47, Coastal Carolina 7

Harrisonburg, Va. • Todd Centeio threw for four touchdowns and ran for a fifth as James Madison routed No. 23 Coastal Carolina in what it viewed as its postseason game.

JMU earned a technical share of the Sun Belt’s East Division title with the same 6-2 conference record as the Chanticleers. But the Dukes aren’t eligible for a title or bowl bid under terms of their transition from the Championship Subdivision to the Bowl Subdivision.

UCF 46, South Florida 39

Tampa, Fla.: Alec Holler made a leaping, one-handed catch for a touchdown on a 14-yard pass from Mikey Keene with 20 seconds remaining to lead No. 25 UCF to a win over South Florida and earn a spot in the American Athletic Conference championship game.

Keene completed a 41-yard pass to Javon Baker for a first down at the South Florida 29. Keene added a 10-yard run on a keeper to get the ball to the Bulls’ 15 and set up the game-winning play for 9-3 UCF. The Knights finished 6-2 in the conference.
