HINTS FROM HELOISE

Send hints to heloise@heloise.com or to Heloise, P.O. Box 795001, San Antonio, TX 78279-5001.

Dear Heloise: I am a 79-year-old female who is going to have a complete knee replacement next month. I read with interest the letter from “Frustrated Shopper” complaining about “armchair shoppers” who choose curbside shopping and thus receive better parking spaces. “Frustrated Shopper” notes that people probably spend less because they do not indulge in promotional shopping, whereas the in-person shoppers spend more and deserve better spaces.

I take a different approach. Of course, curbside parking was offered by businesses as an option in response to the coronavirus pandemic to protect customers and employees alike. As a retired public health nurse, that makes sense to me. I tried curbside shopping, but would rather shop in-person.

My orthopedic surgeon encourages me to actually park some distance from the store entrance. He tells me to keep moving, walk as much as possible and keep those joints in motion. So, I say to “Frustrated Shopper” — enjoy the walk to the entrance. — A Reader, via email

Dear Heloise: I can take up to nearly a dozen pills at a time, mostly supplements my former med-tech wife thinks are helpful.

My method is to put them all in my mouth and position them on top of my tongue, and then take some liquid. I then flip the pills back with my tongue as I swallow. Except for one or two that sometimes fall off the tongue, they all go down. Once in a great while, one of the larger ones gets stuck halfway down. I cough it back up, and a second gulp of liquid finishes the project. — Harvey Versteeg, via email

Dear Heloise: Every year, I shop for the birthday cards I will send out each month. I purchase the entire year’s worth of cards at once. I have a list on my phone of the cards I send out and use that as a reference when purchasing the cards. When I get home, I sit down, personalize, address and stamp each card, and then put them in my outgoing mail basket separated by month. I have calendar reminders on my computer so I get a notification of upcoming birthdays and never forget to send the card.

This makes it easy; all the cards are ready to send, and I never forget a birthday. — Shelly Lott, in Ohio
