Colorado’s own Dave Logan ‘all in’ on Sanders as next Buffs

BY TYLER KING tyler.king@gazette.com

Dave Logan is Colorado sports.

His voice matters in more ways than one.

The longtime voice of the Broncos is one of just six players ever drafted into the MLB, NBA and NFL and also happens to be the most successful high school football coach in the state’s history.

Saturday, Logan won a fourth straight CHSAA 5A state title, coaching Cherry Creek to a 24-17 win over Valor at Empower Field at Mile High.

Logan still bleeds black and gold.

A star wide receiver for the Buffs in the ‘70s, Logan is fired up at the prospect of Deion Sanders being the next coach of the CU Buffs.

“I would be all in,” Logan said Saturday. “I think that he would bring excitement to Boulder.

“I love the University of Colorado football program. It has pained me to see where we are. Back when I played, my senior year we had 12 guys drafted. We had dudes and we could play with anybody.

“That’s where I want to see this program get to. And I think we can get that back, but we’re in the basement right now.”

If anyone knows how to build a winning program, it’s Logan.

Not only has he done it at

Cherry Creek in the last decade, he also did it at Arvada West, Chatfield and Mullen. So when he says the key to turning around the Buffs is bringing in high-quality players, he knows what he’s talking about.

“You’ve gotta start building that thing foundationally, and I think a guy like Deion comes in and, just because of his persona, he comes in and immediately gets the attention of not only kids around here, but kids nationally,” Logan said. “You can’t win in football unless you have talent. You don’t have to have the most talent, but you gotta have the requisite talent in order to win and I think that’s one thing he’ll be able to do.”

Of course, college football is different from when Logan played, and he’s fully aware of that.

The challenges he mentioned are the ones interim CU coach Mike Sanford talked about consistently during his two months leading the team.

“I’ve had college coaches tell me now that not only do you have to recruit kids to go there, that after they get there you’ve gotta re-recruit them,” Logan said.

“Part of keeping your roster intact is having an exciting program and winning games.

“That’s just the environment we’re in. My hope is a guy like (Sanders) brings some excitement to them and I’m excited for it.”
