IN 1923

The groundhog is an old fraud, said Dr. W. W. Arnold, noted bird doctor of Colorado Springs, who stated that he looked for an early spring, hogs or no hogs, shadows or no shadows. “Why, several robins have visited the hospital to chat with the feathered patients,” he said, “and they are excellent indications of early spring weather.”

IN 1948

The Walden Oil company’s filing station and gasoline storage establishment at 202 S. Cascade Ave. was partly destroyed in one of the hottest fires the fire department has fought. They put out the blaze in about 15 minutes, towing a leaking transport truck filled with gasoline out of the ruins and prevented 20,000 gallons of gasoline underneath the parking space in front of the building from exploding.

IN 1973

M. C. Poor of Denver will address the local Railway Historical Society on the early history of the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railway. The lecture will cover the construction of 135 miles of road prior to 1880. Poor spent 11 years researching and writing a book on the history of the railway that was published in 1949. It has since become a collector’s item, commanding prices of $300 to $400.
