TCM Special Theme: Black History Month: ‘Coming of Age’

TCM, 6 p.m.

Each Saturday evening in February, Turner Classic Movies celebrates Black History Month with a double feature of films related to a certain theme. Tonight’s titles feature coming-of-age stories, beginning with the 1975 comedy/drama Cooley High (pic

tured). Written by Eric Monte, who based it on his own high school experiences, the film is set in 1964 on Chicago’s Near-north Side, where the lives of four carefree high school seniors and best friends, including an aspiring playwright and an all-city basketball champion, take a tragic turn. Complemented by a soundtrack of classic Motown hits, Cooley High is led by Glynn Turman and Lawrence Hilton-jacobs. Following that is the Best Picture Oscar-nominated drama Sounder (1972). Starring Best Actor nominee Paul Winfield and Best Actress nominee Cicely Tyson, the film is set in the Deep South during the Great Depression, where the oldest son of a family of Black sharecroppers (Kevin Hooks) comes of age amid their economic and personal hardships.
