The undefeated Pine Creek Eagles take the field at D20 Stadium Thursday before a game against the undefeated Fountain-fort Carson Trojans in a matchup of the best of the local 5A teams. Pine Creek defeated Fountain-fort Carson 4010.
Jonathan Coar didn’t need to utter a word Thursday at District 20 in the battle of Class 5A Southern League unbeaten teams. The Pine Creek junior’s feet spoke volumes as Coar rushed for three touchdowns, hit a field goal and helped the Eagles beat Fountain-fort Carson 40-10. “We came into the game knowing it would be a physical one,” Coar said. “But we just came out and did what we do best. Our offensive line dominated their defensive line.” The Eagles (6-0) jumped out to a 10-0 lead with 7:49 left in the first quarter. The Trojans (5-1) punted on their third drive and the Eagles ran it to the Trojan 28. Coar needed just one touch to run 28 yards for the touchdown and build a 17-0 lead with 6:05 left in the quarter. After Pine Creek turned it over on downs at Fountain-fort Carson’s 2 yard line,
Mason Miller snuffed out a Trojans run play in the end zone for the safety that built a 19-0 lead with 7:52 left in the half.
“Our defense has been playing well all season,” said Pine Creek coach Todd Miller. “It’s something we hang our hat on. Our guys tackle well and our coaches do a good job of having the kids in the right position. (Fountain-fort Carson) was doing some things to manipulate us, but our kids settled down and gave them a hard time.”
The Trojans added a field goal before the end of the half to extend the lead to 19-3. And Coar proved unstoppable even after halftime adjustments.
Coar again went 28 yards — a 27-yard run, followed by a 1-yard dive — to score and build a 26-3 lead with 5:25 left in the third.
The junior’s final touchdown came with 7:44 on the clock in the fourth on a 6-yard bolt past the Trojans’ defense to make it 33-3.
“We had the belief and momentum the whole game and never slowed down,” Coar said. “They never had an answer for us and we capitalized on that.”
Aidan Vanaman scored the Eagles’ final touchdown on a 50yard dash down the Pine Creek sideline with 4:10 left.
The Eagles’ defense held Fountain-fort Carson to its lowest output since Sept. 30, 2022, when Pine Creek shut out the Trojans 14-0.
The Eagles also stymied Mathias Price, Class 5A’s leading rusher and the state’s number three ball carrier.
Price scored a 71-yard touchdown reception to give the Trojans their final score of the game. The Eagles held the senior without a rushing TD.
“When you make a team one dimensional it’s difficult for them,” Miller said. “They have to get out of their comfort zone and that’s hard. Our defense made them panic early on when their run game wasn’t clicking. They started throwing the ball and that’s out of their character. They want to grind it out.”
Pine Creek heads to Regis Jesuit (2-3) at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 6 while Fountain-fort Carson returns home to face Legend (4-1) at 6 p.m. Oct. 5.
