Gov. Ron Desantis, R-fla., hit former President Donald Trump over his age, arguing that it would negatively affect his ability as president. In an appearance on CNN’S “State of the Union,” Desantis told host Jake Tapper that Trump, 77, is unfit for the presidency due to his age. “Look, when you get to this point — the presidency is not a job for somebody that’s pushing 80 years old, I just think that that’s something that has been shown with Joe Biden,” Desantis said. “Father Time is undefeated. Donald Trump is not exempt from any of that.” He then speculated that Trump’s unwillingness to debate his Republican primary opponents was due to issues around his age. “This is not the same guy as the Trump in 2015 and ‘16. That Trump would show up on the debate stage, he would barnstorm,” Desantis said. “Now he’s wedded to the teleprompter, he’s not willing to debate, and he’s running on many of the same things he promised to do in 2016 and didn’t deliver.” Desantis’ campaign has moved to make Trump’s age an issue, often drawing parallels with President Joe Biden’s age, who is turning 81 years old on Monday. The strategy also comes as the Florida governor faces his worst polling to date. His current average polling is just 14.7% in polls taken Nov. 2-16, compared to Trump’s 58.9%, according to Realclearpolitics.
