Christie promises never to be silent about Trump ‘drama and chaos’
BY ASHER NOTHEIS Washington Examiner
Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie vowed Sunday not to remain silent in speaking out against former President Donald Trump, even if he becomes the party’s nominee for president in 2024.
Christie was asked about a recent opinion piece from the Washington Post, which predicts that once Super Tuesday arrives in March, Trump will be the party’s 2024 presidential nominee and that all of his critics in the Republican Party will “fall silent out of self-preservation.” The op-ed comes as Trump continues to lead in the party’s primary race, despite facing multiple legal setbacks while campaigning.
“Look, I can’t speak for everyone in my party, I can only speak for myself, Margaret,” Christie said on CBS’S Face the Nation. “And anybody who knows me knows I will not be silent. I haven’t been silent since the day I got into this race, and in fact, unlike others, Nikki Haley says he was the right president for the right time, and that for some reason, you know, drama and chaos seem to follow him. The reason is that he acts like someone who doesn’t care about our democracy, he acts like someone who wants to be a dictator, he acts like someone who doesn’t care for the Constitution. In fact, he’s even said himself he would be willing to suspend the Constitution if the election wasn’t going in his direction.”
The former New Jersey governor went on to state that he was the only Republican 2024 nominee not to vow to support a candidate who was convicted of a felony, a promise several of his other opponents in the primary did make. He also asked why anyone would want to vote for Trump if one wanted to see the return of “some decency and civility.”
Christie’s comments against the former president come as Trump faces a multitude of indictments, 91 in total, for various trials he has attended throughout 2023. The indictments were issued against the former president in regards to several investigations, including his involvement in attempting to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia and the January 6 Capitol protest.
The Republican Party’s next debate is scheduled for Wednesday in Alabama, with the Republican National Convention expected to inform all eligible candidates who can attend the fourth Republican debate on Monday. Christie said he is “confident” he will be one of the eligible candidates.
Like the last three Republican debates, Trump will not attend Wednesday’s debate but instead will attend a private fundraiser in Florida being held at the same time as the debate. The day prior, Trump is expected to attend a town hall event in Iowa, which will be hosted by Fox News’s Sean Hannity, according to the Hill.
