A look back

Six female and one male in nursing caps and gowns behind a table with bowls and pots. Photo identified on back. From left to right: Miss Greenman, Edna H. Ashenhurst, Bertha Weaver, Mr. Nakamura (Patient), Dorothy Debore, Alyce Hare, Helen Hickman. Mr. Nakamura (Naky), was among the last of the tuberculosis patients and was well enough to return to Japan in either 1918 or 1919. However, he did not make it home. Having “recovered” from TB he was deemed well enough to go into town. He apparently become overtired, caught the flu, and in less than a week he passed away. Naky was very artistic and painted a beautiful, patriotic mural on a patient’s body cast which all the nurses signed. Research indicates that Seichi “Arthur” Nakamura died in Colorado Springs on Oct. 26, 1918, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery. He immigrated from Japan and worked as a photographer in Altoona, Pa., before coming to Colorado Springs for treatment of his tuberculosis at Beth-el Hospital. Photo taken circa 1917.
