Schwarzenegger: Biden and Trump too old to run
BY EDEN VILLALOVAS
Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is hoping a third-party candidate will prevent another matchup between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, blasting the two front-runners for holding back their respective parties.
Schwarzenegger refused to endorse Trump’s presidential campaign despite coming from the same party and working in a similar space on film and television prior to holding office. He called the former president, 77, and Biden, 80, too old to hold office.
In an interview with Politico celebrating 20 years since he was elected governor of California, Schwarzenegger said he was looking for another option for 2024 because “none of them are perfect and also because of the age factor.”
“We need new blood” and “a new breed of leaders,” Schwarzenegger said.
The former governor called for a fresh face in both major parties, questioning how someone new can make headway when the “headlines are all Biden or all Trump, so there’s no room for any of those other guys to get in. How do you build a name?”
Last month, “The Terminator” star told Kristen Welker on NBC’s Meet the Press that Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W. Va., is an alternative option who stands out, emphasizing candidates other than Biden and Trump are not focused on enough.
“Joe Manchin is one of them that I think stands out because he’s kind of like a center guy,” Schwarzenegger said. “He comes from an energy state, but he’s a Democrat, so he knows the challenges and all that.”
Last week, Manchin, 76, announced he will not run for reelection in 2024, fueling speculation that he will launch a third-party presidential run in 2024 with the centrist organization No Labels.
A large majority, 71%, of voters in five battleground states think Biden is too old to be an effective commander in chief, and 39% feel the same about Trump, according to a New York Times-Siena College poll.
“People are looking for new blood,” Schwarzenegger said. “They look for something new and with power because the problems are so complex, and they’re so big, that you need someone that has energy.
