CC, Air Force players enter transfer portal

Moves include 1 AFA freshman, 3 CC players

It may be the first of April, but college hockey players weren’t foolin’ around as dozens of players around the country entered the transfer portal.

Three Colorado College underclassmen as well as Air Force freshman defenseman Owen Baumgartner entered the portal Monday.

For CC, forward Noah Serdachny and defensemen Nikolai Charchenko and Antonio Fernandez added their names to the list of Tigers who intend to play elsewhere next season.

The Gazette previously reported five seniors — Ray Christy, Nicklas Andrews, Chase Foley, Danny Weight and Tyler Coffey — had entered the portal. They were joined by a sixth senior in senior forward and captain Logan Will late last week.

However, the seniors are in a different situation as they all have a year of eligibility remaining due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And CC only offers graduate degrees in education.

Will played all 37 games for the Tigers this season and was sixth on the team in points with 18 on seven goals and 11 assists.

Charchenko, a sophomore out of Vicotria, Minn., has appeared in one contest for CC in two seasons.

Fernandez, a freshman out of San Jose, Calif., skated on the Lincoln Stars in junior hockey alongside several current Tigers who have made a dent in the stats sheets, including netminder Kaidan Mbereko, Noah Laba and Gleb Veremyev. However, Fernandez has not seen a lot of ice time, appearing in two games for CC this past season.

After playing 27 games and recording six points on three goals and three assists for CC his freshman year, Serdachny, a sophomore, appeared in five games for the Tigers this season.

For the Falcons, senior defensemen Luke Robinson and Sam Brennan entered the portal late last month, per therinklive.com. Given that Air Force is a service academy, there is no path for the veteran Falcons to skate with their teammates for a fifth season.

Robinson had 10 points on two goals and eight assists for Air Force, whereas Brennan posted seven points on three goals and four assists.

Baumgartner’s entering the portal is a blow for the Falcons. The freshman out of Owatonna, Minn. showed flashes of greatness for Air Force several times over the past season. He scored the Falcons’ first goal — and his first of the season — Dec. 1 against Bentley in spectacular fashion. He took the puck coast-to-coast, weaving past defenders and beat netminder Connor Hasley for the finish. Feb. 17, he scored twice, including the team’s game-winner against top 20-ranked RIT.

Baumgartner is one player coach Frank Serratore said had “major league skills” on the Falcons roster.

He finished the year with 10 points on four goals and six assists through 24 appearances.
