Tomas Tatar breaks through with first goal for Avs

Colorado concludes 5-game homestand Wednesday against Buffalo Sabres

The scoring drought is finally over for Colorado Avalanche newcomer Tomas Tatar.

Late in the first period Monday against Calgary at Ball Arena — in his 26th Avs game since signing in September — Tatar skated to the open net in front and received a pass from Ross Colton. Tatar buried a wrister and got mobbed by teammates in celebration of his first goal for Colorado.

“Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever waited this long,” Tatar told Altitude TV during the first intermission. “But it came at a good time. … Guys were excited for me. They were lifting me up. I’m grateful for teammates like that.”

Tatar, 33, entered this season with 211 career goals over 12 NHL seasons. He netted 20 with New Jersey in 2022-23. That’s why his zero goals tally with the Avalanche didn’t stack up. He still contributed eight assists. But it seems

Tatar has found chemistry on the team’s third line playing with Colton and Logan O’Connor.

“He’s had a lot of chances, right? Just unable to finish it off,” Bednar said. “I’m really happy for him that he got that. Hopefully, that gives him a little life. We know he has the ability to be able to chip in offensively more than he has.”

Meyers back in lineup

Ben Meyers did not waste an opportunity in his first game called up to the Avalanche this season.

The fourth-line winger scored a game-tying goal in the second period. Meyers played in 39 games for the always injured Avs last year, at center, before starting this season with the Colorado Eagles. He excelled playing wing in the AHL with seven assists and five goals before getting a shot back with the Avs.

Expect Meyers back in the lineup Wednesday with the Avalanche concluding a fivegame homestand against the Buffalo Sabres.

“I thought he was great,” Bednar said of his play Monday night. “Ben Meyers has gone down there and gone to work. He’s moved from center to wing. Time will tell. Is that a better position for him to be able to play here? Maybe. It’s an easier job. But he’s been outstanding (with the Eagles), and his analytics show it. They’re off the charts in creating scoring chances … and defending side of it. I thought he was rock solid defensively tonight and then they chip in a big goal.

“That’s as good an outcome for calling up a player as you can imagine. So, he’s going to get another crack to go again (on Wednesday).”
