MLB ROUNDUP
Detroit: Miguel Cabrera hit his 511th home run as Detroit won the completion of a suspended game and Spencer Torkelson hit a threerun homer in a seven-run seventh that led the Tigers over the Kansas City Royals for a sweep.
Cabrera, who is retiring after the season, tied Mel Ott for 25th on the career home run list. The 40-yearold has 373 homers for Detroit, tying Norm Cash for second behind Al Kaline’s 399.
Cabrera did not play in the regularly scheduled game but intends to appear in the season’s final three games this weekend against Cleveland.
At 54-105, the Royals have their most losses since 2005.
Mariners 3, Rangers 2
Seattle: J.P. Crawford lined a two-run double with two out in the ninth, lifting te Seattle to a win over Texas and stopping the Rangers from clinching a playoff berth for at least one day.
Seattle’s first three batters of the ninth reached against Aroldis Chapman (6-5) on two hits and a walk. Jonathan Hernández then came in, retiring two Rangers before Crawford went the other way and drove a pitch over the leftfielder, scoring CAL Raleigh and Dylan more for the walkoff win.
Braves 5, Cubs 3
Atlanta: Max Olson hit his major league-leading 54th homer, and the Atlanta Braves clinched homefield advantage throughout the postseason.
Austin Riley had three hits and scored two runs as the Braves (10356) won for the sixth time in seven games. The NL East champions can match the franchise record for wins with a season-ending sweep of the Nationals.
Chicago has dropped 13 of 19 to fall out of position for an NL wild card. With the three-game sweep by the Braves, the Cubs (82-77) fell a half-game back of Miami for the third wild card.
White Sox 3, Diamondbacks 1
Chicago: Arizona delayed clinching an NL wild card berth, losing to the White Sox as Andrew Vaughn and Yoán Moncada homered for Chicago.
Arizona (84-75) is in position for the second NL wild card and its first postseason appearance since 2017. Arizona would have clinched Thursday with both a win and a Cubs loss at Atlanta.
Athletics 2, Twins 1
Minneapolis: Rookie Ryan Noda hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth and Oakland beat the AL Central champion Minnesota Twins.
Noda’s 16th homer helped Oakland rebound after Minnesota had tied the game in the sixth. It was just the third win in the past 14 games for the Athletics, who avoided being swept and temporarily eluded their 111th loss, which would be the most in the majors since Detroit lost 114 games in 2019.
Orioles 2, Red Sox 0
Baltimore: Anthony Santander homered, DL Hall worked out of a sixth-inning jam and the Orioles clinched the division title.
Dean Kremer (13-5) allowed two hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings, striking out eight, and the Orioles reached 100 wins for the sixth time in team history and first since 1980. Baltimore prevailed in a brutally tough division that relegated the Red Sox and New York Yankees to afterthoughts.
Pirates 3, Phillies 2
Philadelphia: Kyle Schwarber went deep, Bryce Harper went off on an umpire and was ejected and Trea Turner went from second to home on a stolen base in Philadelphia’s loss to Pittsburgh.
Schwarber launched his 46th homer, matching last year’s Nl-leading total, with a first-inning drive into the second deck. Turner stole third base in the eighth.
Blue Jays 6, Yankees 0
Toronto: Chris Bassitt reached 200 innings for the first time, Brandon Belt hit a three-run homer and Toronto moved one step closer to an AL wild card berth by beating the New York Yankees.
Daulton Varsho and Matt Chapman hit solo homers for the Blue Jays (88-71), who entered in position for the second AL wild card, a half-game ahead of Houston.
Brewers 3, Cardinals 0
Milwaukee: Garrett Mitchell doubled, walked twice and scored in his first big league game since April, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals.
Corbin Burnes, Julio Teheran (3-5) and Ethan Small combined on a six-hitter for the NL Central champions. Burnes struck out four and walked one in four innings in his final tuneup for the postseason, throwing 39 of his 66 pitches for strikes.
