Happy Hanukkah

TCM, beginning at 6 p.m. To commemorate Hanukkah, TCM will celebrate “Tradition” with not one but two versions of author Sholem Aleichem’s Yiddish short stories about Tevya the Dairyman. First up is one of the most recognizable films in Jewish entertainment, the 1971 screen adaptation of the Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof (pictured), which tells the story of a Jewish peasant (Topol) with traditional values who wrestles with marrying o¥ his choosy daughters in pre-revolutionary Russia. The film won three Oscars, including Best Original Song Score. This is followed by the Yiddish film Tevya (1939), a nonmusical film adaptation.
