There will be no super sales on flat-screen TVs here. Only the religious message of the holidays will prevail during “Light of the World Christmas Experience” by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The free annual event will feature a crèche exhibit from 5-8 p.m. Thursday and 1-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, live outdoor nativity performances at 6, 6:30 and 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and a Christmas concert at 5 and 7 p.m. Dec. 10.
Christmas music and messages also will play in the chapel.
“It brings the magic and spirit of Christmas through a focus on the savior,” said event director Megan Parr. “It’s a great family event to partake of the true meaning of Christmas. It’s a place to come and feel peace and love.”
Featuring 25 performers and real animals, including a sheep, goats, a horse, donkey and alpaca, the nativity performance showcases the story of Mary and Joseph as they make their way to the stable in Bethlehem where they welcome the Christ child in a manger. The cast is made up of church members and attendees can greet the animals and drink hot chocolate after each 15-minute show.
About 300 crèches from around the world also will be on display, all donated by church and community members, including one that survived the 2012 Waldo Canyon fire. A crèche is a nativity that features Mary, Joseph and Jesus. The smallest of the tabletop displays measures only a few inches.
Interspersed with the indoor crèches are seven stations, each featuring a different large projection and props to bring you into that particular time period. They include the prophets who prophesied the savior’s birth, Mary, Joseph, the shepherds and the wise men.
Giant story books in front of each station also invite viewers to reflect on how they can connect to the featured figure. For example, in the display devoted to Mary is Scripture and conversation about her experience with the angel who told her she was pregnant.
“She was afraid at first, but he comforted her,” Parr said. “She showed her faith by saying be it unto thy word. We pose questions like how can you accept God’s will in your life and have faith like Mary?”
The last of the stations is called “Light the World,” and features a projected video of Jesus serving and asks what it means to follow in his example in today’s world. There will be displays showing how people can serve within their home, community and world simply via their phones.
“We have a wall of light display,” Parr said, “and once they choose a way to serve they can add a light to the display wall. We’re all contributing our light to the world.”
