Two Biden administration immigration officials are set to depart after their crafted immigration policy came under scrutiny from progressives.

Lise Clavel, deputy assistant to the president and senior adviser for migration, and Leidy Perez-Davis, special assistant to the president for immigration, are both set to leave in the next few months, Politico reported. Clavel is set to go at the beginning of March, and Perez-Davis will depart after a few more months.

After a month in their positions, the reason for their departure was apparently backlash from progressives over one of the administration’s most strict immigration policies yet.

The proposed two-year policy, aimed at holding back a flood of immigrants following the expiration of Title 42, would disqualify adults and families who crossed the border illegally for asylum unless they could prove that they were denied asylum in Mexico or another country.

Congressional Democrats decried the policy, which they said was a return to the more restrictive immigration policies of the Trump administration.

“We are deeply disappointed that the administration has chosen to move forward with publishing this proposed rule, which only perpetuates the harmful myth that asylum-seekers are a threat to this nation,” Sens. Cory Booker D-New Jersey, Bob Menendez D-New Jersey, Ben Ray Lujan D-New Mexico, and Alex Padilla D-California said in a joint statement Tuesday night. “In reality, they are pursuing a legal pathway in the United States.”

The Biden administration defended itself against the criticisms and shifted the blame to Congress.

“To be clear, this was not our first preference or even our second. From day one, Biden has urged Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform and border security measures to ensure orderly, safe, and humane processing of migrants at our border,” an administration official said in a call this week, Politico reported.

Jason Houser, Biden’s chief of staff at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, is also due to depart in the coming days.
